Decagon Tech Summit: The Highlights You Missed

Decagon, in Partnership with the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, recently hosted engineering leaders in Nigeria to our Decagon Tech Summit. It was an amazing conversation around everything engineering talent, including the state of tech talent recruitment locally and globally.

Themed Building The Dream Team- Finding, Retaining, and Scaling Engineering Talent, the Summit brought together different stakeholders in the Nigerian tech ecosystem to talk about the future of talent sourcing and retention in the tech industry.

It featured two-panel sessions – one on talent management, and another on engineering leadership

Temi Adekunle, Decagon’s People and Process Manager, moderated the session on Technical Talent Management, which had leaders in technical HR like Sophie Okonkwo (Global Talent Acquisition – Engineering EMEA at Microsoft), Ikeoluwapo Adebowale (Independent Technology Talent Consultant), Renee Audifferen (HR Business Partner – Engineering at Flutterwave), Omonuwa Olulano (Chief Human Resource Officer at Appzone Group), and Alex Ohai (Head of Human Resource at 9PSB)

Basically, this had panelists discuss how companies can create a better environment and culture that talents can thrive.

In her comments, IkeOluwapo pointed out that tech talents cannot continue to be treated the way they were a decade ago – emphasizing the need for companies to be creative and flexible in managing tech talents.

Sophie also added that, instead of organizations constantly clamoring for the extremely limited senior engineers,  they should give junior and mid-level developers who are enthusiastic to grow and learn on the job a chance.

For the second panel session, Decagon’s Engineering Team Lead, Bond Akinmade, moderated a conversation on handling engineering leadership the right way.

He had Dotun Adekunle (CTO – Nigeria at Opay),  Ikenna Okwukaogu (VP of Engineering at Carbon)  Abiola Aluko, CTO of Max), Femi Aluko, (Principal Engineer at Paystack), and Tosin Adesipe (VP of Engineering at Kobo360).

The panelists agreed that companies should focus on adapting to an evolved work model, by creating a flexible and goal-oriented working environment for the engineers to be able to thrive.

One other Highlight of the Summit was the DevFeture which showcased two Decagon engineers (DecaDevs) who are now building exciting products for companies in Nigeria, US, and Europe.

In the past three years, we’ve built a pool of 600+ software engineers – all vetted, carefully assessed, highly hirable. Decagon engineers now support dev teams at Indeed (Austin, Texas), Tribl (Atlanta), Return Queen (New York), Sterling Bank, Carbon, Kobo360, RenMoney, MaxNG, and others – all in Nigeria.
